We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for delivering core Ubuntu components, including system startup, compilers, language runtimes, toolchains, networking, and storage configuration and management. This fast-paced, technical role operates at the core of Linux server systems.

As part of the Foundations team, you will influence Ubuntu's development at the intersection of open source and enterprise technology. You will lead and inspire engineers, develop their skills, foster a positive culture, and drive strategy and execution.

Globally remote

Responsibilities include:
  1. Leading and growing a distributed engineering team
  2. Demonstrating sound engineering principles through active leadership
  3. Planning, estimation, and execution of projects
  4. Defining vision and strategy with product management
  5. Collaborating with cross-functional teams
  6. Advancing modern software development practices
  7. Promoting excellent engineering and organizational practices
  8. Fostering a healthy, collaborative engineering culture
  9. Aligning with other teams on product architecture and roadmaps
  10. Participating in in-person sprints twice a year
Qualifications:
  1. Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (e.g., deb, rpm)
  2. Proven leadership or management of software engineering teams
  3. Strong knowledge in Linux system architecture, boot process, and toolchains (Java/GCC/Python/Rust/Go), ARM or RISC-V
  4. Engagement with open source communities
