Position Summary
The Medical Transcriptionist will be responsible for accurately transcribing dictated medical reports, correspondence, and other clinical documentation provided by physicians and healthcare professionals. The role requires excellent listening, language, and typing skills to ensure timely, precise, and confidential documentation that supports patient care and hospital operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Listen to and transcribe digital dictations from physicians and healthcare providers into clear, accurate, and grammatically correct medical documents.
- Prepare a variety of reports including patient histories, physical examinations, discharge summaries, operative reports, consultation notes, diagnostic imaging reports, and referral letters.
- Review and edit drafts prepared by speech recognition software for accuracy, grammar, and formatting.
- Verify patient information, medical terminology, and details in transcribed reports to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Flag inconsistencies, errors, or missing information and clarify with the physician or supervisor when required.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient health information in compliance with hospital policies and data protection regulations.
- Adhere to standardized templates, style guides, and hospital-approved medical terminology.
- Meet deadlines for submission of reports to ensure timely availability in patient records.
- Collaborate with medical records staff to ensure proper filing, coding, and integration of documents into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and training related to medical transcription practices.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Medical Transcription, Medical Records, Health Information Management, or related field.
- Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) or equivalent certification preferred.
- Minimum
2–3 years' experience
in medical transcription, preferably in a hospital or clinical environment. - Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
- Experience with speech recognition technology and electronic health records (EHR/EMR) systems.
- Familiarity with international standards (ICD/CPT coding exposure desirable).
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent listening and comprehension skills.
- High typing speed with accuracy (minimum 60–70 WPM preferred).
- Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and medical vocabulary.
- Attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Strong sense of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
