A critical care physician plays a pivotal role in the healthcare system by providing high-level medical care to critically ill patients.

  • This involves making rapid and informed decisions, often in life-threatening situations, to stabilize and support patients with severe medical conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Providing continuous medical care to patients in the ICU, including those with sepsis, multi-organ failure, respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, and post-operative complications.
  2. Leading multidisciplinary rounds and collaborating with other specialists to coordinate patient care.
  3. Performing and supervising critical care procedures, such as intubation, central line insertion, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, and ventilator management.
  4. Monitoring patient progress, interpreting diagnostic results, and adjusting treatment plans accordingly.
  5. Ensuring timely communication with patients' families regarding prognosis, treatment options, and goals of care.
  6. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records and contributing to critical care documentation and audits.
  7. Supporting and educating nursing staff, residents, and allied health professionals.
  8. Participating in rapid response teams and code blue situations.
  9. Adhering to ICU protocols, infection control standards, and ethical guidelines.

The ideal candidate will possess a medical degree from a recognized institution, along with postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, Pulmonology, or Emergency Medicine, and fellowship or certification in Critical Care Medicine. They should also hold a valid NHRA license in Bahrain and have minimum 3–5 years of experience managing critically ill patients. Additionally, they must be proficient in the use of ICU technology and interventions, with excellent clinical judgment, leadership, and communication skills.
