Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Somali Linguist to join our team at RESO. This role involves providing interpretation, transcription, and translation services in support of ongoing operations and mission requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct accurate and consecutive translation, transcription, and interpretation in Somali into English, ensuring seamless communication in complex environments.
  • Translate various syntax and expressions, including colloquial and slang phrases from English to Somali and vice versa, maintaining cultural sensitivity and nuance.
  • Work and travel in austere environments, adapting to dynamic situations while maintaining professional standards.
  • Provide expert advice on cultural and ethnic significance of statements, conversations, situations, and documents, fostering deep understanding and collaboration.
  • Accurately scan, research, and analyze foreign language documents, identifying key information and conveying it effectively.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned, leveraging linguistic expertise and analytical skills to drive results.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Possess native proficiency in Somali and English, with Level 3/3 proficiency according to the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale, or Native proficiency preferred.
  • Have extensive knowledge of Somali culture, with previous work in the region, ideally with Native familiarity.
  • Demonstrate experience interpreting and translating Somali into English, showcasing expertise in both languages.
  • Exhibit an ability to understand the essentials of all speech in standard dialect and vocabulary, rarely requiring paraphrasing or explanation.
  • Familiarity with local culture and customs, with the ability to operate within the local populace, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
  • Meet U.S. citizenship requirements and possess SECRET Personnel Security Clearance.
Additional Requirements
  • Hold the necessary level of Personnel Security Clearance (PSC) specified in the job description, or be eligible to qualify for same.
  • Undergo an extensive medical examination to be certified medically fit for duty in the work assignment location, including dental clearance.
  • Be vaccinated according to required immunizations for the Area of Operation, or able and willing to receive required immunizations prior to deployment.
  • Have sufficient unaided hearing to perform duties safely, hear emergency alarms, and follow instructions without visual cues.
  • Be able to work under stressful circumstances, meet short suspense dates, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Meet physical demands, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, and working in extreme temperatures, low humidity, rain, and blowing sand and dust.
  • Be prepared to work uncommon hours, extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays, demonstrating flexibility and commitment.
