I. Position Summary and Nature of Work

The
Occupational Therapist (OT) is responsible for leading the process in the development, implementation, and coordination of the occupational therapy program. This role requires the independent and effective self-management of a defined clinical caseload, utilizing evidence-based, client-centered principles to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate interventions.

The OT uses professional judgment and clinical knowledge to develop individualized programming based on occupational performance deficits, enabling the patient in components of self-care, productivity, and leisure.

The post holder will be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of their own practice, including the management of individuals in their care. Clinical reasoning and professional judgment are essential to ensuring the safety of clients and protecting the liability of the organization.

II. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

A. Clinical Practice and Intervention

  1. Caseload Management: Independently and effectively self-manage a designated clinical caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits.
  2. Assessment: Understand and apply the Occupational Therapy process. Evaluate the client's ability and formulate an occupational profile through functional, behavioral, and standardized assessments, skilled observation, and histories. Utilize a range of standard and non-standard Occupational Therapy assessments and techniques in areas such as work, leisure, personal, domestic, and environmental contexts.
  3. Planning and Implementation: Formulate specific and appropriate management plans, including the setting of time scales, and engage individual and/or group participation in the treatment programme. Plan, facilitate, implement, and evaluate a range of group interventions according to patient need.
  4. Adaptation and Equipment: Be responsible for the assessment and prescription of minor adaptations and equipment to facilitate independence. Adapt and modify the environment, including assistive technology, to meet individual needs and help clients function as independently as possible.
  5. Specialist Knowledge: Demonstrate specific knowledge of the key concepts of biological, physical, social, psychological, and clinical sciences in relation to occupational performance. Demonstrate clinical expertise in complex needs, including sensory processing dysfunction, autistic spectrum disorder, learning disability, and related challenging behavior.
  6. Review and Modification: Monitor, analyze, evaluate, and modify the Occupational Therapy process and treatment in order to measure progress and ensure the effectiveness of intervention.

B. Documentation and Accountability

  1. Record Keeping: Be responsible for the written and electronic recording of up-to-date, accurate information relating to the Occupational Therapy intervention, aligning with relevant professional and institutional guidelines.
  2. Reporting: Synthesize evaluation results into a comprehensive written report reflecting strengths and barriers to client participation. Provide appropriate specialised written reports and/or recommendations regarding individual needs.
  3. Compliance: Ensure that own clinical practice complies with appropriate professional standards and guidelines. Adhere to relevant federal, state, and local legislation, regulation, and policies that affect occupational therapy practice.
  4. Referral: Know the professional and personal scope of own practice and make referrals to other agencies as appropriate.

C. Communication and Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  1. Collaboration: Actively participate in multi-disciplinary discussions, ward rounds, and meetings in order to negotiate individual care programmes. Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure the team understands client occupational performance strengths and needs.
  2. Interpersonal Skills: Maintain professional and courteous working relationships with staff and respect the equality and diversity of every person. Use a range of verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, carers, relatives, and other professionals.
  3. Adaptation: Adapt intervention and communication where there may be difficulties with understanding due to physical, psychological, cognitive, or social problems. Demonstrate empathy and provide emotional support and guidance for clients and adapt intervention where circumstances may be sensitive or distressing.
  4. Training Others: Provide advice, training, and information to the education team and other health professionals. Educate clients, personnel, and family to facilitate skills in areas of occupation, as well as health maintenance and safety.

D. Leadership, Supervision, and Professional Development

  1. Supervision: Be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of junior staff and/or students. This includes the prioritization and allocation of tasks to non-qualified/junior members of staff. Provide regular specialist training and mentoring to junior colleagues and students.
  2. Service Development: Contribute to the setting and maintenance of quality standards. Take an active role in the facilitation of ongoing development and participate in the delivery of the Occupational Therapy Service Development Plan.
  3. Professional Growth: Review and reflect on own practice, making effective use of regular supervision and appraisal. Demonstrate ongoing personal development through participation in training opportunities.
  4. Research and Evidence: Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research and apply findings to practice. Utilize professional literature, evidence-based research, and continuing education content to make practice decisions. Broaden research and development skills through participation in local audit and research projects.

III. Professional Requirements and Qualifications

A. Essential Qualifications

  • Dip COT or relevant OT Degree.
  • Registration with the relevant Health Professions Council (HCPC) or equivalent licensing body.
  • Valid driving license.

B. Experience and Knowledge

  • Work experience within a health setting (e.g., NHS/health setting or pediatric practice setting).
  • Ability to communicate clear and concise information verbally, electronically, and in writing.
  • Ability to assess and represent patients with complex needs, including those with communication difficulties, dementia, and terminal illness.
  • Knowledge of the impact of disability and its effect on lifestyle.
  • Experience in the effective use of regular supervision.
