Overview

Senior Web Engineer role at Canonical. Senior Software Engineer on the Web Engineering team; responsible for driving best practices, identifying risks, leading technical discussions, and delivering large projects. Location: remotely in the EMEA region. Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems. We value transparency, intellectual honesty and teamwork.

Responsibilities
  • Identify what matters for the team and drive initiatives to improve them
  • Design and implement well-tested and documented software
  • Debug and fix issues encountered by users
  • Lead engineering processes through code and architectural reviews
  • Contribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kind
  • Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team
  • Contribute to product success through technical advocacy
  • Mentor and develop teammates in a structured and systematic manner
What we are looking for in you
  • Design architectural approaches that support business objectives and curate technical quality standards
  • Strong soft skills; values like curiosity, initiative, and accountability
  • Academic track record and/or compelling alternative path for Computer Science or STEM
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative otherwise
  • Driven to go above and beyond with good organizational skills and ability to deliver to schedule
  • Experience researching new technologies and integrating modern approaches
  • Ability to provide comprehensive and insightful code reviews
  • Attention to accessibility and performance
  • Professional written and spoken English
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Result-oriented with personal drive to meet commitments
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events up to two weeks
Nice-to-have skills
  • Experience with container tech such as LXD, Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience fostering and maintaining a talented team by defining excellence
  • REST API design, development and governance
  • Drive to deliver performance engineering and security experience
