The Music Department is a thriving and ambitious part of the school, overseen by the Deputy Head Whole School and managed by the Director of Music. The Music Department also includes a Lead Teacher of Music, five academic music teachers, two full-time instrumental tutors, and a team of visiting instrumental tutors. The department encourages both students and teachers to actively engage in music within the classroom and the wider school community. We are seeking an outstanding and experienced Head of Instrumental Music to start in August 2025. The successful candidate will be an accomplished instrumental musician capable of tutoring piano students from beginner to Diploma level. Piano accompaniment is an essential part of this role. Experience in managing student enrollments in performance exams (Trinity College London and ABRSM) would be advantageous. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching & Tutoring Provide a minimum of 25 hours of instrumental lessons per week. Tutor students and piano (one-to-one). Run weekly after-school ECAs for the Music Department. Accompany students on the piano for concerts, assemblies, performance exams and competitions. Coordinate the termly Beginners Concerts and Tuneful Tuesdays in collaboration with the Director of Music. Jointly run the weekly Live Lounge sessions with the Director of Music in order to showcase the instrumental students and build student enrollment. Encourage students to set goals and explore diverse repertoire. Leadership & Coordination Lead and oversee a team of instrumental music tutors. Coordinate the timetabling of instrumental lessons. Serve as the primary contact for parents regarding instrumental and vocal lessons. Expand the instrumental programme by increasing student enrolment and introducing new ensemble opportunities. Support and mentor peripatetic tutors, providing feedback and training as needed. Implementing feedback from the Trinity College examiners will feature in this feedback for improvement. Collate and submit performance exams on the Trinity College Portal during the exam diets as agreed upon with the Director of Music. Performance & Development Organise and facilitate student performances, competitions, and masterclasses. Actively participate in musical performances alongside students and staff. Organise instrumental demonstrations to maintain student engagement. Foster ensemble participation and establish new ensembles as needed. Provide coaching to the team of instrumental tutors to support them in successful presentation of their students in performance exams. Observe the team of instrumental tutors to monitor performance and provide guidance. Written feedback will be provided to the instrumental teacher and Director of Music. Administrative & Professional Duties Maintain accurate student progress records. Monitor student and tutor attendance to peripatetic classes. Liaise with Head of Academies on peripatetic tutor payroll. Manage equipment inventory and ensure instrument care. Coordinate and facilitate ABRSM/Trinity examination entries. Keep up to date with industry trends, CPD, and innovative teaching methods. Work collaboratively with the Whole School Music Department, attending meetings, concerts, and performances. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE: Place the individual child at the centre of everything that they do. A passion for achieving high levels of learning and a team player. Prioritise happiness, enjoyment and a sense of fun in their work and lessons. A relevant degree, PGCE or BEd or the equivalent. The ability to teach Piano to Diploma level is essential and the ability to teach a second instrument is desirable. A passion for their subject and pedagogical development. Proven ensemble leadership, and instrumental and vocal programme. High expectations and aspirations for all students. A demonstrable commitment to the overall development of young people. An Enhanced Disclosure/DBS/ACRO Police Check or equivalent, and who is committed to the welfare of all children.
