Role Overview

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our team delivering the Ubuntu Server Distribution worldwide. This individual will be passionate about the future of Ubuntu, mindful of the open-source ecosystem dynamics, and aware of the needs of large, innovative customers.

  • Lead a globally distributed team of engineers, fostering talent development through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career growth.
  • Collaborate with Product Management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu and your team.
  • Effectively set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
  • Advocate and advance modern, agile software development practices.
  • Develop and promote great engineering and organizational practices.
  • Cultivate a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Participate in robust engineering processes through code and architectural review.
  • Engage with teams at Canonical, the open-source community, and commercial partners.
  • Oversee the quality of the Ubuntu Server image family.
  • Plan and deliver Ubuntu Server features.
Requirements
  • Lovingly develop and grow people, with a strong track record of doing so.
  • Be knowledgeable and passionate about software development.
  • Have 3+ years of experience leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers, with a plus for distributed team management.
  • Focus on success and timely delivery of high-quality software.
  • Experience working in an agile development environment.
  • Hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or similar.
  • Exhibit strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English.
  • Have practical experience with a modern GNU/Linux distribution, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Be familiar with at least one of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services.
